A Chancenkarte has no family route - the job it leads to does

Applicants choose the Chancenkarte because it lets you enter Germany to look for work without a job offer in hand. What the marketing rarely says: the permit covers you, and only you. There is no dependant title attached to it - and a Familiennachzug application to a Chancenkarte holder is, in the Bundesregierung's own words, permissible only "if at all" in the individual case. The door for your spouse and children opens later, at the moment you convert the Chancenkarte into a qualifying employment title.

Why the gap exists

The Chancenkarte (§20a AufenthG) is an Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Suche nach einer Erwerbstaetigkeit - a residence permit to look for qualified work or to pursue recognition of a foreign qualification. By design it is short and transitional: a Such-Chancenkarte for up to one year, then a Folge-Chancenkarte for up to two more years once you hold a concrete job offer for qualified employment. A Niederlassungserlaubnis (§9 AufenthG) is expressly ruled out for the Such-Chancenkarte. The permit is built to be a bridge, not a destination.

Family reunification lives in a different part of the law. Under §29 AufenthG, Familiennachzug is tied to a residence that establishes a prospective, lasting stay, and §27 AufenthG asks whether you actually intend to build family life in Germany. Advice services often note that, formally, family reunification to a §20a holder follows the "normal" rules (Lebensunterhaltssicherung, Sprachkenntnisse, Wohnraum). In practice, a capped job-search permit does not clear the prospective-stay bar - which is why the Bundesregierung described Familiennachzug to Chancenkarte holders as permissible only "if at all" in the individual case. There is no special ban on Chancenkarte families. There is simply no title for them to attach to yet.

What actually opens the door

The route is not blocked, it is sequenced. The Chancenkarte is the search phase; the family route opens when you convert it into a qualifying skilled-worker title - §18a / §18b AufenthG (Fachkraft mit Berufsausbildung or akademischer Ausbildung), the EU Blue Card (§18g AufenthG), or §19c. These titles carry standard Familiennachzug for spouse and minor children, and the Blue Card adds privileged terms: no Wohnraum check when the salary threshold is met, no A1 German required of the joining spouse, and immediate unrestricted labour-market access for that spouse. Same person, same family, different permit - and the gate finally opens.
