The dMAT Pre-Gate: a New APS Test for Three Master's Fields, with a 29 June Cutoff
APS India has placed a new requirement in front of the APS document check. From the summer semester 2027 Master intake onward, applicants whose previous degree falls in one of three field families must sit a standardized test - the Digital Master Test (dMAT) - before they submit their APS documents. It replaces nothing in the existing procedure. It is an extra, sequenced step that opens only for a specific population, and a single cutoff date decides who is caught by it.
What the dMAT is, and what it is not
The dMAT is a standardized academic aptitude test for Master's applicants, administered by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V.) and rolled out in stages. APS India is not running the test; it remains responsible for the APS procedure and continues to verify the authenticity and formal plausibility of your academic documents exactly as before.
Two separate certificates result. g.a.s.t. issues the dMAT certificate; APS India still issues the APS certificate, and the dMAT result is recorded on it. The important structural point is what the dMAT is not: it is not a stand-alone pass or fail for the APS certificate. A low score does not, on its own, cause an APS refusal. The APS certificate documents the verification result and, where the requirement applies, reflects the dMAT result alongside it. Admission decisions stay entirely with the German universities.
Who must take it
The requirement is a three-part gate. All three conditions have to hold at once: you are a Master's applicant, your prior degree sits in an affected field, and your application relates to the summer semester 2027 intake or later while you registered or shipped on or after the cutoff. The affected field families are:
Interdisciplinary degrees sit in the grey zone here. Programs such as Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Data Science or Financial Technology can read as either inside or outside these families. The binding classification is the official affected-fields list published by APS India, not a self-assessment of the degree title. Check it before assuming you are out.
Who is exempt, and the cutoff that decides it
The hinge is the date 29 June 2026, the day the requirement was published. For a given APS procedure you are exempt if you completed your APS online registration before that date, or if you shipped your complete APS documents before it - the shipment exemption holds even if the package left slightly later than registration and even if verification is still running, so keep proof of shipment. If you already hold an APS certificate, you do not need the dMAT for that finished procedure at all. A new APS application started later follows whatever rules are in force at that time.
Several groups sit outside the requirement regardless of the date:
- Bachelor applicants, and Bachelor students who have not yet completed at least 5 semesters of a 3-year program or 7 semesters of a 4-year program.
- PhD applicants.
- Applicants whose prior degree does not fall within the listed fields.
- Applicants in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university-partnership programs - submit the confirmation and your group number with the APS documents.
One timing note for the near intake: the first dMAT certificates are only available from 12 October 2026, so the requirement is aimed at summer semester 2027 and later. It is not built for the winter semester 2026/27 Master intake.
Where the dMAT sits in your timeline
If you are in scope, the order is fixed: take the dMAT first, then submit your APS documents with the dMAT certificate inside the package. There is one operational easing. Applicants who registered on or after 29 June 2026 may send the rest of the APS package first and add the dMAT certificate once it is published - but APS India can only complete the procedure once that certificate is in, and every other document still follows the normal APS checklist. The first cycle runs on these dates:
The test runs at licensed centers across India, listed at registration as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. Registration, payment, seat booking, technical setup and result delivery are all handled by g.a.s.t. on a first-come, first-served basis. APS India cannot reserve a seat, so a fully booked center means choosing another. Operational detail lives on the dMAT site at d-mat.de/en.
The trap: the dMAT does not touch recognition
The most expensive mistake here is to treat a dMAT result as if it carried weight it does not have. The dMAT does not replace anabin, does not change your institution's recognition status, and cannot rescue a degree from a non-recognized institution. If your university is listed as H+/- or H- in anabin, or its status is unclear, a strong dMAT score does nothing to make that degree eligible for APS certification or for German admission. The sequence APS India itself recommends is to confirm your anabin status before you register for the dMAT and before you submit APS - because spending the fee and the weeks does not move the gate that actually decides recognition.
Structural reading
The dMAT is additive, not decisive. It adds a step and a recorded result, but it does not verify your documents, does not establish recognition, and does not admit you. The two gates that can actually stop a Master's applicant - anabin recognition and APS document authenticity - are unchanged and sit on either side of it. Treat the dMAT as one more dated item in the package, scheduled early enough that the 12 October certificate date does not collide with your application deadline. Clear anabin first: no dMAT score repairs a degree the database does not recognize.
