Indian architects often assume that a job at a German practice lets them work as an Architekt. It does not. In Germany the title and the right to sign building plans sit behind one door: registration in a state Architektenkammer. The architectural work itself, though, is open to you on your degree's comparability alone. Two different thresholds, and most people only need the first one to start.
Gate 1
Working in a practice
Open on degree comparability. You do architectural work, just not under the title.
Gate 2
The title and signing plans
Locked behind registration in the Architektenliste. This is the regulated gate.
What it takes
Degree, practice, check
A recognised degree, two years of practice, and an equivalence assessment.
Architecture is a genuinely regulated profession, which sets it apart from most engineering. The protected titles Architekt, Innenarchitekt, Landschaftsarchitekt, and Stadtplaner are bound by law to one thing: entry in the Architektenliste of a state chamber. So is Bauvorlageberechtigung, the right to submit building plans as the responsible person.
But being hired to do architectural work is a separate question. You can be employed in an Architekturbüro, design buildings, and build a career there without ever registering, as long as you work under a registered architect and do not call yourself Architekt or sign plans yourself. The firm hires you on your qualification. The chamber, and only the chamber, grants you the title.
If your plan is to join a practice as an employed architectural professional, the visa works like any other academic skilled-worker case. For a §18b skilled-worker permit or an EU Blue Card under §18g AufenthG, what the German mission checks is comparability of your qualification, not chamber membership.
Gate 1 is open on your degree. Everything above the amber line runs through one mandatory door: the Architektenkammer.
To call yourself Architekt and to sign plans, you register in the Architektenliste of the Landesarchitektenkammer where you live. The chamber is the only competent body, and the bar is real.
Structural reading
The firm hires you on your degree. The chamber grants you the title. The building authority accepts your signature only once the chamber has. Work out which door your goal actually needs before you plan around the wrong one.
Here the Indian degree matters. Qualifications from the EU, the EWR, or Switzerland often receive automatic recognition under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC). A third-country degree does not. It runs through the individual equivalence assessment, and where the chamber finds substantial gaps it can require an Ausgleichsmaßnahme, an adaptation period or aptitude test, before entry.
Where recognition has to be completed inside Germany, §16d AufenthG is the residence title for that phase, after which you switch to §18b or §18g. So the honest read of the headline is this: the Architekt title is protected and gated by the chamber, but the work that most job offers describe is open to you well before you clear that gate.
